How to read cost: Standard FR-4 is the 1.0× baseline. Multipliers are indicative bare-board budget ranges for broadly comparable size, layer count, copper weight and quantity—not fixed material prices or quotations. Actual cost can change substantially with stack-up, laminate thickness, panel utilization, metallization, impedance control, tooling, order volume and current supply. Other technical values are also typical public references and do not represent guaranteed stock or fabrication capability.

Material selection is a system decision
Electrical
Dk affects impedance geometry and phase velocity. Df contributes to dielectric loss, but copper profile and routing geometry also matter.
Thermal
Tg indicates a resin transition, while thermal conductivity describes heat transfer. A high-Tg FR-4 is not the same as a metal-core heat spreader.
Manufacturing
Drilling, desmear, bonding, copper treatment and hybrid construction can change yield, lead time and the real cost of a material choice.
Commercial
Brand, grade, thickness and regional availability may matter as much as the nominal material family—especially for prototypes and mixed builds.
Questions buyers ask before choosing a laminate
Is high-Tg FR-4 automatically a low-loss material?
No. Tg describes the resin's glass-transition behavior, while Df describes dielectric loss. Official laminate guides list high-Tg materials with very different Df values, so high-speed and RF designs must be checked against the exact grade, test frequency and datasheet.
Can Rogers and FR-4 be used in the same multilayer PCB?
Yes. RO4000 materials are commonly used only on performance-critical layers while FR-4 forms less critical layers to control cost. The bonding system, material symmetry, copper balance, thickness control and potential warpage still require review by the selected fabricator.
Should I choose aluminum PCB or high-Tg FR-4 for heat?
Choose by the actual thermal problem. High-Tg FR-4 can improve thermal-cycle and lead-free processing margin, but high Tg alone does not mean high thermal conductivity. For moving heat away from LEDs or power devices, an IMS or metal-core construction may be more suitable. Also check dielectric thermal conductivity, thermal impedance, isolation voltage and layer-count needs.
Why does the final Dk differ from a comparison table?
Published Dk is tied to a material construction, test method and test frequency. Design Dk, process values and datasheet Dk should not be treated as interchangeable. Controlled-impedance designs should therefore use the fabricator's approved stack-up and the value appropriate to the intended model.
What files help you confirm a material recommendation?
Gerber or ODB++ data, layer stack-up, board thickness, copper weight, impedance table, operating frequency, temperature range, quantities and required certifications are the most useful starting points.
